🧾 WB Miscellaneous Services Exam Syllabus

The West Bengal Miscellaneous Services Exam is conducted by the West Bengal Public Service Commission (WBPSC) for recruitment to various Group B and C posts under different departments. The exam tests candidates on general knowledge, arithmetic, language skills, and analytical ability.

The selection process is divided into three stages:

  1. Preliminary Examination (Objective/Screening)

  2. Main Examination (Written)

  3. Personality Test / Interview

1️⃣ Preliminary Examination (Objective)

The Prelims is a screening test with multiple-choice questions. Only candidates who qualify in the prelims are allowed to appear for the Main Examination.

  • Total Marks: 200

  • Duration: 90 minutes

  • Paper Type: Objective (MCQ)

  • Number of Questions: 100

Topics Covered in Prelims

General Studies (150 marks):

  • History (Ancient, Medieval, Modern India)

  • Geography (Physical and Indian geography)

  • Indian Polity and Constitution

  • Economy and basic economic concepts

  • Science (basic concepts of physics, chemistry, biology)

  • Culture, sports, and general awareness

  • Current affairs (national and international)

  • Static general knowledge related to India and West Bengal

Arithmetic (50 marks):

  • Number systems

  • Ratio and proportion

  • Percentages

  • Profit and loss

  • Simple and compound interest

  • Time, speed, and distance

  • Time and work

  • Averages, HCF, LCM

  • Mixtures and alligations

  • Data interpretation (tables, charts, graphs)

  • Mensuration and age problems

  • Boats, streams, and work-related problems

The Prelims exam is designed to test the basic aptitude and general knowledge of candidates.

2️⃣ Main Examination (Written)

The Main Examination is descriptive and evaluates candidates on language skills, general knowledge, and arithmetic abilities. The exam consists of three papers:

Paper I — English

  • Essay writing

  • Paragraph writing

  • Precis / summary writing

  • Translation (from Bengali/Hindi to English or vice versa)

  • Grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension

  • Sentence correction and usage

Paper II — Indian Language

Candidates choose one Indian language:

  • Bengali

  • Hindi

  • Urdu

  • Nepali

  • Santali

Topics include:

  • Comprehension passages

  • Grammar and vocabulary

  • Usage and sentence structure

  • Translation and writing exercises

Paper III — General Studies + Arithmetic

General Studies (Group-A):

  • Current affairs

  • History, culture, and heritage

  • Geography of India and West Bengal

  • Indian polity and constitution

  • Economy basics

  • Science and technology

  • Environment and ecology

Arithmetic (Group-B):

  • Same topics as Prelims arithmetic, but descriptive

  • Includes problem-solving and analytical questions

3️⃣ Personality Test / Interview

Candidates who qualify in the Main Examination are called for a Personality Test / Interview.

  • Evaluates communication skills, confidence, reasoning, and overall personality.

  • Marks obtained in the interview contribute to the final merit list.
